The best way to determine your ring size is to get it measured at a jewelry store. However, if that is not possible, you can determine an approximate ring size by using Method 1 or Method 2 below. (See the section on this website titled "Using a Metric Ruler" if necessary.)
Tips for measuring ring size:
-
-
Measure your finger in warm temperatures at the end of
the day when the fingers are largest.
-
If your knuckle is much larger than the place on your
finger where you wear a ring, use Method 2 below.
However, measure both your knuckle and the place where
you wear a ring and select a size between the two
measurements. The ring will probably be loose but there
is not much you can do about that.
-
Ring sizes can be affected by several normal body changes
due to hot or cold weather, physical exertion, illnesses,
medication taken, and by gain/loss in body weight. Try to
determine when your finger is most normal in size and
measure it then to get the most accurate measurement
possible.
METHOD 1
Find a ring that fits you or the intended recipient of the ring. Place the ring on a ruler with millimeters (mm). Place the ring on the ruler so you can see the mm marks on the ruler through the ring. Measure the greatest distance across the inside of the ring. This is the “distance across the inside of a ring.” Now use the chart below to determine your ring size. Since the rings I make are adjustable, if your measurement is between two ring sizes, choose the smaller size because it will probably be easier for you to adjust the ring to make the ring larger than to make it smaller. (Each ring will be made as close as possible to the desired size. Instructions for making additional adjustments, if necessary, will be included with each ring purchased.)
METHOD 2
Find a plastic bag “twist tie” that is made from paper on at least one side that will reach completey around your finger. (A piece of non-stretching string or strip of paper about 1/4 inch may be used instead if your prefer.) Wrap it snuggly around the base of the appropriate ring finger. Use a pen or pencil to mark the point on the “twist tie” where it overlaps, forming a complete circle. Use a ruler with millimeters (mm) to measure the length from the starting end of the “twist tie” to the pen/pencil mark. This is the “distance around finger” in mm. Now use the chart below to determine your ring size.
